The Scarlino Museums
MAPS Museo archeologico di Portus Scabris
The Portus Scabris Museum collects the finds that emerged during the construction of the touristic port in the Portiglioni natural harbour. The underwater excavations brought to light a considerable archaeological deposit which certifies, in the Puntone di Scarlino area, the presence of the famous Portus Scabris, mentioned by ancient sources. The finds, amphorae and pottery from the late Etruscan and Roman period, document the life of the port and the commercial traffic in which the territory was located.
The museum is located in an early 1900s hydraulic pumping station overlooking the Scarlino padule, once a large and healthy coastal lake, today a protected area of international naturalistic importance.
"Riccardo Francovich" Documentation Center of the territory
The "Riccardo Francovich" Documentation Center of the territory collects the archaeological finds that illustrate the history of the hillock on which the Rocca Pisana di Scarlino stands, from the Bronze Age to the 17th century, without neglecting the main monuments and archaeological sites in the territory. Of great interest is the "Tesoro di Scarlino", consisting of one hundred gold coins of the fourteenth century found during the archaeological excavations of the Canonica della Rocca Pisana.
